There are several models of telescopic ladders available on the market today. Commercially, be it your big box or a corner hardware store you will find these three basic popular styles:
They each offer advantages and disadvantages over each other, however, the telescopic style which falls under the collapsible system tends to be what most DIYers would prefer these days and below is the reason behind it.
Articulated Ladders - The articulated units are the most popular and can be found everywhere. Their simplicity and reliability makes them the choice for the service industry. They are priced in the middle range. Storage and transport is half the space but the same weight of a standard ladder. The only disadvantage is that most of them can’t reach high enough when fully extended.
Extendable Ladders - The extendable units can reach higher as they are actually two ladders in one; however there is a trade off on the weight they can support, and the safety margins decrease the higher they reach. Storage and transport is the same to a standard ladder. Prices hover just above the lower range. A disadvantage is the space it takes for storage, transport, and the awkwardness of handing the unit.
Collapsible Ladder - A collapsible ladder is better known as a telescopic ladder. They offer many advantages the older designs above do not. They can have the same weight capacity averaging at 300lbs. Their construction being mostly aluminium; makes them very light. When fully collapsed they do not take much more space than the size of a large briefcase. The only disadvantage is that the price range for the units is in the higher range. Although with their increase in popularity the prices are coming down drastically.
